10 (Cheeky) Factoids About Braces

Recently, orthodontic braces have been gaining much attention in the news because numerous adult celebrities (such as Tom Cruise, Faith Hill, Mia Farrow, et cetera) have decided to fix their bite and the alignment of their teeth through metal braces. Typically, people get their braces when they’re really young, but the current trend for adult braces is certainly proving that it doesn’t matter if you’re 40—you can get braces if you want perfectly straight teeth.

  1. You will likely wear braces for two years to treat your overbite, snaggletooth, and other issues. However, some people actually end up wearing braces for up to four years even with regular visits to the orthodontist.
  2. Young children typically get their braces at the age of 12. Around this time, they’ve already lost most, if not all, of their milk teeth and have all their important permanent teeth in place. So don’t be surprised to find a lot of kids in the sixth grade wearing braces.
  3. Children normally pay their first visit to the orthodontist at the age of seven.
  4. For the first month of wearing metal braces, you’re likely to lose a bit of weight (as you would mostly be consuming mush and soup) and be advised to not have candy, chewing gum, and carbonated beverages.
  5. These are the common reasons for getting braces: irregularly spaced teeth, overbite, under-bite, and a popping jaw.
  6. These are your pain buddies: bite wafers, warm saltwater rinse, ice cream, acetaminophen or ibuprofen.
  7. You can’t avoid lisping and spitting saliva even when you’re being careful. That’s just how it is when you have braces in your m
  8. You simply can’t go anywhere without a compact mirror with you because braces snag everything and you’ll constantly be paranoid about having all sorts of things stuck to the wires and brackets.
  9. Dedicated oral care is a must to ensure the healthy condition of your teeth despite the presence of braces. You’re highly prone to plaque buildup if you don’t carefully follow instructions on how to brush, floss and rinse.
  10. Orthodontic rubber bands for a lot of girls become part of the daily fashion plan. Rubber bands come in a vast variety of colors, so why not get creative with them, right?
