Meet Your Corona Orthodontist – A Dental Practitioner Answers FAQs

Here at All Smiles Orthodontics and Children’s Dentistry, we frequently get questions about orthodontics from patients and their parents. We’ve compiled these questions and provide answers to these below.

What is orthodontics?

Orthodontics is a specialized branch of dentistry that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of dental and facial irregularities like crooked teeth and improperly positioned jaws.

What does an orthodontist do?

Meet Your Corona Orthodontist – A Dental Practitioner Answers FAQs

A Corona orthodontist helps straighten crooked teeth through a variety of treatments, including the use of braces.

When should my child see an orthodontist?

It is highly recommended for a child to visit an orthodontist upon reaching the age of seven. This will allow the Corona orthodontist to prevent some dental problems through early treatment.

Can adults seek orthodontic treatment?

Orthodontics is not just for children. In fact, any adult who wishes to improve his smile can benefit from the help of an Corona orthodontist.

How long does an orthodontic treatment last?

Orthodontic treatments can last anywhere between 18 and 27 months, depending on a few factors. These include the type of treatment prescribed, how closely you follow your dentist’s instructions, whether you keep your appointments, and how well you practice good oral hygiene habits.

What are the types of braces?

Apart from conventional metal braces, your Corona orthodontist may recommend a few other types of braces including self-ligating braces, clear aligners, and metal braces that are transparent. Some braces offer a few advantages like forgoing the use of elastic ties and reduction of the number of visits to the dentist.

Do braces hurt?

Initially, they do. You may experience some discomfort a few days after your braces have been installed. Often, a Corona orthodontist will prescribe aspirin or ibuprofen to help you deal with the pain. However, if the pain you are experiencing does not seem to diminish, you have to notify your Corona orthodontist.

What about sores?

The development of sores is also fairly common among patients who recently got braces. In order to reduce the chances of getting sores, an orthodontist may apply wax to the bracket or wire.

What do I need to do after getting my new braces?

For the first week or so, it is highly recommended that you go on a soft diet. At the same time, you will need to learn how clean and care for your teeth and your braces. It is crucial for you to keep your teeth and braces clean because braces tend to attract a lot of food debris. Once your braces are installed, you need to brush and floss your teeth after each meal.

Will braces interfere with my favorite hobbies?

If you play a wind musical instrument, you can continue to do so. However, you will need to use a brace cover. The same thing applies to sports; you can still play but you will need a specialized mouth guard.

Are there types of foods that I need to avoid?

As much as possible, you will need to avoid eating hard, crunchy and sticky foods. You may eat veggies and fruits but you need to cut these into bite-size pieces. You may also chew gum but opt for sugar-free ones.

A bracket came off. What do I do?

This is not considered as a dental emergency and you do not need to see your dentist as soon as possible. What you need to do is clean the bracket and keep it secure until your next visit to the dentist.
